PM Plans to Review Law Limiting Politicians to Only One Nationality

KAMPONG CHAM: Prime Minister Hun Sen has stated that he plans to revise the law and potentially require all politicians in Cambodia to have only one nationality, after receiving a number of complaints from foreign diplomats over the local courts convicting some Cambodian politicians who hold nationalities from their countries.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion and upgrade of National Road No. 7 from Skun roundabout to Kizuna bridge roundabout in Kampong Cham province on Monday morning, 9 January, Prime Minister Hun Sen advised all foreign friends of Cambodia who wish to intervene and help convicted politicians with their dual citizenships to think twice before submitting the same request.

"Ambassadors keep saying this," he said. "Stop foreign friends from claiming that someone is holding their country’s citizenship, it is a mess! If [these people are] in your country, you can say that, (but they are in Cambodia)."

The Prime Minister said that revising this law so that Cambodian politicians are only allowed to have one citizenship may affect the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) as well since there are likely members of the party with dual citizenships as well, however, he said the party can bear this loss.

The current Cambodian constitution prohibits only 13 people from having dual citizenship. These are the nine members of the National Election Committee (NEC), the President of the Senate, the President of the National Assembly, the Prime Minister, and the Chairman of the Constitutional Council.
